WAIKELE (HawaiiNewsNow) - Four people are dead and one person is in critical condition following an industrial accident at the HIDC Small Business Storage Friday morning.
The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) initially responded to a car fire just before 9 a.m. When crews arrived to the scene, they discovered fireworks exploding in the area.
According to the Honolulu Police Department (HPD), six males were working at the storage unit when the explosion occurred. Three males in their 20s and one male in his 50s were pronounced dead.
Two of the bodies were recovered from the scene, but investigators are waiting for the fire to burn out before entering the unit to recover the last two victims.
Two other men were hurt in the explosion. One was taken to the Straub Hospital in critical condition, the other victim refused treatment
Family members identified one of the victims as Justin Keli'i of Kaneohe. The 29-year-old is a graduate of Castle High School.
Sources also identified one of the victims as 50-year-old Robert Leahey.
HIDC consists of 130 storage bunkers converted into mini warehouses.
According to leaseholder Peter Savio, the victims may be workers from Donaldson Enterprises, a company that was leasing the storage cave.
