(Honolulu-AP) -- The University of Hawaii women's basketball team defeated UCLA 70-66 Saturday night at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort Classic. It was the season-opener for both teams.
Christen Roper had 14 points and eleven rebounds to lead Hawaii. The Rainbow Wahine led 65-55 with 1:34 left in the game before the Bruins scored eight unanswered points. Roper then hit jumper only to have Lisa Willis sink a 3-pointer to cut Hawaii's lead to 67-66 with 28 seconds left.
The Rainbow Wahine clinched the victory down the stretch when Jade Abele hit a pair of free throws and Milia Macfarlane made one of her own. Abele ended with 13 points, while April Atuaia and Natasja Allen added 12 each.
