(Honolulu-AP) -- The University of Hawaii opened defense of its NCAA men's volleyball title last night by sweeping Lewis 30-17, 30-21, 30-22. Costas Theocharidis had 14 kills, Delano Thomas had 12 and Eyal Zimet added ten in the season-opener for both teams.
Thomas led all players with four blocks, while teammate Tony Ching had a match-high ten digs. Hawaii's Kimo Tuyay, the 2001 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Year, registered 43 assists in the nonconference match. Fabiano Barreto had 12 kills for the Flyers.
