Shanghai Oriental, Warriors Open Outrigger Invitational With Wins

(Honolulu-AP) -- Top-ranked Hawaii beat #4 Penn State in the opening round of the round-robin Outrigger Invitational men's volleyball tournament. The 3-0 Warriors took the first game 30-19 before losing the second to the 0-1 Nittany Lions 25-30.

Hawaii took the match by winning the next two games 30-23, 30-23. Costas Theocharidis led Hawaii with 24 kills. Delano Thomas had 15 kills and five service aces for the Warriors, while teammate Tony Ching had 13 kills and four service aces.

Zeliko Koljesar had 18 kills for Penn State and one of the Nittany Lions' three service aces.

The tournament opened earlier in the night with Shanghai Oriental of China defeating Number Seven Ball State 30-24, 30-21, 30-26. The three-day tournament is set to tonight with Hawaii going up against Ball State.
