Melt The Ice

While some reports indicate an easing of the crystal methamphetamine problem here in Hawaii, let's not kid ourselves. Meth is still a deep, dark issue that can affect anybody who casually enters into this netherworld. Just one trip down this icy road can lead to immediate destruction- turning a normal life into a car wreck. A 2009 Hawaii Meth Use & Attitudes Survey shows that 19% of teens and 36% of young adults say meth is easy to acquire. 11% of teens report having a close friend who uses the drug, and 18% have family members who have been treated for ice usage. Hawaii ranks #5 in the country per capita for ice use by those 12 and older. Staggering numbers, for sure...

Maybe this is the holiday season to give the gift of support- find the people and the phone numbers that you can give to someone to help them start to get away from this dreaded disease. One in eight teens and an amazing 27% of young adults who answered the Meth Use survey said they have been offered meth. We cannot afford to sit by idly as friends, family, or society members and allow this drug to cripple us. We all pay, as the crime statistics always show an abnormally high number of arrests where meth is a pastime for the offender.

Ice is a vice that's not nice, so make them think twice, even if the abuser doesn't want your advice. A key is preventive awareness and peer or family pressure, to ensure that titillated youngsters remember and live by the adage "Meth. Not even once", as the stark TV ads proclaim. Maybe you can help someone this holiday season to see the light as you act as their icebreaker. Think about it…
