Good Grief and Good Riddance

2009 is history, and some would say "good grief and good riddance". Of course, simply turning over a new page on the calendar does not simply wash away issues that remain from the previous year or years. Shortfall in revenues on many fronts locally forebodes ominous possibilities of tax increases and reduced services in 2010. The inability to resolve the teacher furlough issue and other contracts remains a stain on our scholastic report cards, while the possibility of not being able to afford holding a special election in the first part of the year to replace U.S. Representative Neil Abercrombie is a joke and an embarrassment. Are we really still unsure if we'll have working machines and enough volunteers to support democracy next election?

So what will 2010 deliver in the way of excitement, positive news, and recovery and opportunity for you and yours? What will our part-time legislators do at the county and state levels to ensure that we don't see more disrepair of the infrastructure? And I don't just mean our crumbling roads, lethargic education system, and UH buildings. How will we convince people that it's now safe to come out- that you really can visit Hawaii at reasonable rates and have a happy, healthy time of it, just like in the good old days… of 2007?

Challenges for sure, but also obvious opportunities for innovative thinking and acting, cohesion of minds, and doing the right thing in an expeditious fashion, rather than pondering and positioning what's best for me to get re-elected next fall or keep the status quo. Here's to 2010 in Hawaii; cheers to all. Think about it…
