Bombs Away

A lot of frustrated people keep talking about how someone is going to have to get killed before anything is finally done about the outrageous fireworks abuse every year. Well, we came close this year, with some serious injuries to minors and a greater number of burn victims and fire incidents than in recent years.

But do you really think the legislature will act? Complaint letters to the editor are fine, but only by repeatedly pressuring your elected representatives or by getting petitions signed and handed to these passive officials do you really stand a chance of getting something done this year- if it matters to you. Or else, as in years past, it will be one big powder keg of angst and upset neighbors that merely results in a dud.

When parts of our islands sound like Kabul, Afghanistan on a normal Tuesday night, when people's lives are literally shaken- not for hours, but on-again and off-again for days- something's gotta give, and that give doesn't have to be a loss of life. Set up a few public sites for wild displays, away from homes, buildings, and people who don't want to partake. Fireworks signal good luck? Maybe that means you didn't blow yourself up this year. There are other saner and safer ways to celebrate tradition and have fun. It's time for the pyrotechnics to fizzle out on private property. Think about it…
