Election Daze

Discussion continues about what to do in May regarding a planned special election. Well, it's not planned yet, but it should be planned soon. The thought that the government here simply can't find a way to come up with an estimated $1-million to hold this election to replace Neil Abercrombie for six months in Washington, D.C., is a mock of a sham of a farce of a travesty. One state senator apparently suggested that it might not be that important to have a voice in the U.S. House during the interim period between May and November, as not too many votes have been decided by a one-vote difference in Congress.

Are you kidding me; a local elected official stating that even a single vote by our representative is not that big a deal? Is it any wonder that Hawaii has the poorest voting record of any state in the country when even our duly elected officials aren't sure how important a vote here or a vote there is?!

From the public's point of view, we really don't care where our government finds the million dollars and the voting machines to make this election happen this spring. But please don't tell an informed and wary electorate that we can't have an election because we can't find funds- that's a joke, even by government standards. Unless we want to appear like a third world, backwater nation, let's get this resolved soon and let the real politicking and positioning begin amongst the candidates. Think about it…
