And They’re Off!

The announced candidates for the upcoming vacant U.S. House seat sat side by side last week at a business forum talking about lots of topics and presenting lots of differing points of views. Ed Case, Charles Djou, and Colleen Hanabusa gave attendees and the media a first look at what promises to be an intriguing battle to replace U. S. Representative Neil Abercrombie when (not if) a special election is held in a few months.

One nice thing about these candidates- they are willing to take a stance, explain their position and logic, and readily disagree with their cohorts. Based on your own personal viewpoints on the issues, and IF you take the time to listen to what these candidates have to say, this openness should make it that much easier for you to decide who to vote for.  Then again, too many eligible voters in Hawaii traditionally sit idly on the sidelines when it's time to vote, but then have no problem whining about problems and decisions in the following years.

Hopefully, with many important upcoming races on all of the islands this spring and this fall, people 18-years and older will become more engaged, more interested, more animated, and take note of who plans to do what- if elected. An informed electorate can better make enlightened decisions, and we certainly need some enlightened decision-making by our voters and our elected officials in 2010 and beyond. Think about it…
