In session

The state legislature opened amidst little fanfare last week. In retrospect, maybe if a bunch of loud fireworks had gone off, it would have been a not-too-subtle reminder about one of the many things that need to get handled this time around. The usual flares were sent up about taxes, education, housing and other priorities, but now the real work begins, the details as to what to do and how to get those things done.

Senate and House honchos talked about sacrifice, change, hope, right-sizing, and priorities in newspaper editorials, as the idealistic tones wafted through the hallways in the first few days. Make no mistake about it, we are still in for tough times locally, and either government programs are going to have to be streamlined, or the local residents are going to have to pay more. It's pretty simple when you run a business- to make ends meet, you must either increase revenues or lower expenses.

So how will the Senate and House make it happen? Can bold initiatives come forward when the politicos are also concerned about assuaging their voting constituent base? Sometimes decisions offered for the betterment of the state long-term mean displeasing some of the voters, but that's how bold action occurs- with vision and clarity for the greater good. Will we see that this year? Stay tuned for difficult decisions will be made this winter and spring. Think about it…
