Rail Reality Rankling

Rail, rail, the gang's all here. Just when you thought we were about to begin construction or movement on our Oahu choo choo train, more reports and studies and concerns about above ground rail vs. street level rail, cost overruns, rider usage, etc. Some people say let's get this thing going. Others say not so fast. Everyone has got their fingers on this polarizing, political pie.

The only good thing that might come of this latest concern is some greater sense of common good and final agreement. The last time some people thought something wasn't done right and was pushed before its time was a little flotation device called The Superferry, which is long gone, and I do mean far away long gone- as the bankrupt company behind the ferries is now doing a great service providing relief supplies to Haiti.

So what to make of the latest efforts to take the approved plans and put the brakes on- I guess you could say that this is becoming "snail rail"? The City of Honolulu, the State, the Federal Transit Administration, the federal government, the American Institute of Architects- Honolulu chapter, the Environmental Protection Agency, and a whole host of citizen groups and special interest parties will have to put a period on this discussion, because the commas and semi-colons that keep cropping up after so-called final approvals and deadlines is making this train plan look loco, and not locomotive. Think about it…
