Bank On It

Nice to know that after all of the troubling economic news we heard day after day in 2009, there were some local success stories, including places that you might not think you would hear good things- like the banking industry. Bank of Hawaii got rave reviews for its performance in 2009, and First Hawaiian Bank posted record earnings last year, leading FHB's CEO and Chairman Don Horner to state, "Historically, it's the best year we have had."

So how did the local banks mentioned here perform so well when others floundered and continue to be on thin ice throughout the country? A long time ago, like 2007, some might have suggested that local banks, in general, tended to be conservative with their loans and portfolios. In 2010, that mentality translates in retrospect into smart leadership, dynamic performance, and solid returns.

As a nation we have come to frown, and rightfully so, on the excesses of Wall Street and the egregious business practices of far too many supposedly smart people in corner offices. Sadly, it appears that some of the outrageous windfalls for top dogs are creeping back into the picture- will we never learn? Having said that, it is good to see solid, local performances by banks working right here at home, since their activities touch so many people in so many areas. Think about it…
