Across The Way

I spent some time last week on the Big Island, traversing both the east and west sides. As those of us who live on Oahu tend to get Honolulu-centric and tunnel vision about what goes on in our great state, it is always nice to get out there to see what's going on elsewhere.

Whether it's the Big Island or any of the other Neighbor Islands, we really are all neighbors. And the differences on each island which makes them each unique and special should also remind us of how many similarities we all have in common. We all live on islands; we all have to fly to get anywhere else; we all have our qualms about traffic increasing with solutions a rarity; we all wish for greater opportunities for the next generation; we all hope to rely on solutions from those that we elect to lead us; we all need strong business leaders and businesses to ensure job opportunities and growth for employees.

The next time you have the opportunity to get away to a Neighbor Island- which of course means visiting any island that you don't live on- take a moment while you're there to reflect on the nuances and differences which make each island land mass and its people special, different, and yet part of our whole. It really is a wonderful attribute of our great state unmatched anywhere else in America. Be thankful. Think about it…
