Road Thrill

With the opening of the new Kualakai Parkway in the Ewa/Kapolei area now a reality, a lot of residents are breathing a collective sigh of relief that there is finally traffic congestion relief, with more to come with a future East-West Connector Road. Sure, it took 15-years to get this project started and completed, but that's not atypical of projects like this. Remember how long it took for the airport overpass to get finished? Or how about H-3?

The question now might be, again- what is going to be done and when- for the folks further out on the leeward coast? A simple accident, let alone a tragic one, in the Nanakuli/Makaha/Waianae area can tie things up for hours. Talk about a horseshoe bypass road heading toward the mountains off of Farrington Highway gets mentioned every time one of these bottlenecks occur, but at what point will talk and supposed concern lead to a plan and some action for the stranded thousands?

The Ewa/Kapolei project really got into high gear with round-the-clock work crews in the past two years. Is it unrealistic to hope that design, environmental answers, and decisions can lead to the start of construction for a long-tabled leeward bypass in the next three years? Five years? Residents should demand nothing less from their elected officials. Think about it…
