Fee, Please

The University of Hawaii athletics program is one of the very few programs that has not instituted an automatic student activity fee to help fund its athletic programs. Most of the public universities across the mainland routinely impose such a fee; it's expected and understood. This fee would not just give help to a program that could use the financial boost, it would also provide more opportunities and incentive for students to attend some UH games.

Yes, a lot of students simply don't necessarily want to go to games, but there are a lot of aspects of college tuition and such that help the university that, given the choice, students would opt not to pay for. And, there may be more than just athletic events offered with the proposed fee. At this point in time, one obvious and relatively painless way to stem the tide of red ink flowing from lower campus would be to add a $100 fee per year to each full-time student's costs.

People never like to see costs go up for anything they pay for. It doesn't matter whether it's college students, renters, car buyers, cell phone users, shoppers, or movie goers. But the reality is that the University of Hawaii-Manoa athletics program is an integral part of our community, and this logical fee- while tough to stomach especially during tough times, needs to be acted upon as soon as possible. Think about it…
