Fur-low - KFVE, K5-Hawaii News Now, Local Programming

So what's really at stake as the furlough situation has surpassed the four-month mark? Forget about the students. Obviously, the adults have. The best solution will surely not appeal to everyone, that's how things invariably work out when various partisan parties put in their two cents or four cents or $50-million.

What's at stake is power, control, egos, making big body, and a few other unsavory aspects of the political system. Some people want to teach some other people a lesson in this whole fiasco; unfortunately, it's the students who aren't being taught lessons on Fridays. Recent test results showed a few slight gains and a few slight drops in local public school scores. Sadly, no one seems to react much anymore when these mediocre scores come in year after year. We've accepted mediocrity as our past, present, and future.

So please, spare us the campaign cries about how our keiki are our future, how we need to teach the children to provide the leaders of the future. On the ground level, we do have great teachers who care and who make a difference, for sure. But the higher up you go these days on the educational power and control scale, the less you see in terms of urgency, passion, and finding solutions. Furlough? Very low. Think about it…
