Cock-amamie

A ridiculous resolution to recognize cockfighting for its cultural merits was killed by the Hawaii House of Representatives last week after it had been forwarded by the Tourism, Culture and International Affairs Committee of the House. One cannot deny the historical nature of said activity, for even some of this country's forefathers participated in the events.

But you know what, they also participated in slavery and a few other unsavory cultural activities that should never be celebrated or supported. What's next, a resolution to support the local custom of "Kill Haole Day"? Maybe we can get some support going for the significance of dog fighting to some and look afar to tip our hats to those cultures that still justify the maiming of young women. It's just pure cockamamie.

What passes as amusement for some is an absolutely illegal and cruel activity, and to attempt to rationalize that while illegal, cockfighting deserves to be recognized is merely the first step to somehow legitimize the barbaric death matches. As always, those elected officials who supported this measure were playing to the grandstands, as ardent supporters of the activity (people otherwise known as potential voters) displayed a strong sense of history and pride in their approach to this cutthroat activity. Rather than get into this cock pit, let's see some legislation come forth to pull our state out of its quagmire, folks. Think about it
