Solid As Stone

Sometimes, when something looks too good to be true, it is. But the announcement a few months back about a land donation from developer Jeff Stone and the Weinberg Trust with no strings attached is now about to come to fruition. What a grand plan- a private real estate entity donating land in its area of interest to a private educational entity, willing to put in about $100-million to make the dream grow into a reality for the next generation.

Kamehameha Schools will build an education area in Makaha that will be home to keiki and young adults and will provide scholastic opportunities as well as life lessons literally in the field for any interested leeward side resident to learn about local farming and customs. The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands will also build 400 homes for Native Hawaiians in the adjacent area which is around the Makaha East golf course.

What a wonderful development, literally, to see the public and private sectors getting together to provide enrichment and opportunity in an area too often neglected. Maybe this project will also lead to the much needed bypass road along the leeward coast in the years to come. Kudos to all involved in this progressive, responsible project- we can't wait to see it grow from the ground up. Think about it…
