Re-boot The System

There's an old saying about "two steps forward, one step back". Sometimes, our local political system seems like it's "one step forward, one step back" or even worse.  Stuck in neutral, fixed on preserving the status quo, making sure re-election is first and foremost. Perhaps that is the nature of the game. Keep in mind, there are hard-working, well-meaning, altruistic, elected people who are being called upon to make tough decisions this month.

So maybe it's time to revisit the whole macrocosm that makes up our political system and institutions, from the state constitution to the need for two legislative bodies to the election of a state school board to short school days on Wednesdays to our part-time legislative body… and the list goes on. Will it take frustrated citizens and business leaders to push for real change? Do we have the stomach for it? Obviously, those in charge can't fathom or handle radical change, because for some, it would mean they would be out of work. And for those who complain about the quality of those in office- have you really looked at some of the options when the ballots come out?

Over-simplifying things by simply calling for less government is not the answer- what does that mean? Asking for better government, more accountable government, asking for real explanations and not partisan spin- that seems like a reasonable start. Going through a thorough examination of the very foundations of our local government to ensure that they still work for us all in the 21st century- that's a monumental task, but maybe one whose time has come. Think about it…
