LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO (HawaiiNewsNow) - The University of Hawaii's dominance on the softball field is reflected in the Western Athletic Conference awards, which were handed out at the WAC banquette in Las Cruces Wednesday.

Shortstop Jessica Iwata was named WAC Player of the Year.  She is also a WAC 1st team selection.

Sophomore pitcher Stephanie Ricketts is WAC Pitcher of the Year and she's on the WAC 1st team.

Outfielder Kelly Majam earned Freshman of the Year honors as well as being named to the 1st team.

Third baseman Melissa Gonzalez and designated player Jenna Rodriguez also made the All-WAC 1st team.

First baseman Amanda Taualii is on the All-WAC 2nd team.

Hawaii coach Bob Coolen was named WAC Coach of the Year.

The Wahine open the conference tournament Thursday against San Jose State.

After amassing a 41 and 12 record during the regular season, UH probably does not need to win the conference tournament to secure a bid to the NCAA tournament, but winning a few games would almost guarantee a berth in the NCAA tournament.

"Right now we're in a good place with the 40 wins.  We're in a good place with the number one seed in the tournament.  If we can go a couple of wins in the tournament.  If we end go 2 and 2 we are going to be at 43 wins and only 14 losses and that should help us stay on the mainland for a while," Coolen said.
