It's Now Your Call

The Congressional candidates debate that was seen here on KFVE and its sister stations last week was a real eye-opener. E-mail questions, comments from the audience, provocative questions from the panel, and the intriguing shots (some might say "cheap" shots) taken when candidates grilled each other made this a rare event- a debate that really was a debate, with clear lines drawn in the sand between candidates on some very major issues. I doubt this threesome will be dining together any time soon, or even later.

And to add to the debate on who is fittest to serve the people of this metropolis come the campaigns being run by national committees trying to get their two cents in. Invariably, it comes down to you, the voters of the 1st Congressional District. For you literally hold in your hands the answer. How many of you choose to take the time- and it really shouldn't take too much time to make a "x", stuff, lick  and mail an envelope- will determine who the winner is in this first-round.

But if the results come back and less than half of the eligible voters choose to play in this minimal-time, easy-to-participate election that helps to define a democracy, then shame on the abstainers. At the end of the day, we get what we deserve- in our political leaders, in our schools, and in all of the decisions that affect us all. Disenchantment or support is best expressed by being active, not by sitting by idly and then whining to your buddies or spouse.  Make a decision, and mail it in soon. Now is the time to vote, not to ignore or just think about it…
