Rude Awakening

A student stabbed by a friend while in class… a 17-year old kidnapped and stuffed in the trunk of a car… a pipe bomb destroying high school lockers. Scary stuff, to be sure, and what makes it even tougher to fathom is that all of these events have transpired right here, in Hawaii, over the past couple of months.

When we hear of youthful transgressions on the mainland, we sometimes become oblivious, chalking it up to inner city turmoil elsewhere, simple stereotyping, or we rationalize it as the unfortunate but normal course of events in big cities with all kinds of problems. But what about when it happens right here? What about when serious crime occurs locally in our suburbs or schools with solid reputations?

There are no general conclusions to be drawn from any of these sudden and horrific unrelated events, but it does show that sometimes really bad headlines and stories involving kids happen here, and not in some nameless, faceless, rundown, overpopulated city somewhere else. We are not immune from crime or poverty or problems on our islands. Buts some of these recent incidents involving teens bring it all too close to home, since the occurrences have all taken place right here… at home. Think about it…
