Providing Good Council

27 people stepped forward to express their interest to finish out the Honolulu City Council term of D.C.-bound Charles Djou. 27 people... Many, if not most, claimed that they had no interest in running for a full term in the upcoming fall elections. But it is interesting to note that so many civic-minded individuals came forward at a time when the cry is out there for less government, when the claim is out there that the government is ineffective and simply gets in the way.

And that might be true, but the whiners can't have it both ways. You can't lobby for reduced government without coming up with viable options or solutions. You can't cry out for lower taxation as a general statement and then go to the bank with the larger tax refunds most Americans received in 2010. You can't fairly dis the concept of government while supporting public schools, Medicare, and the loyal military personnel who defend our country- all part of the government.

What you can do is demand accountability, honesty, action, and the over-used word du jour- transparency. What you can demand is less partisanship and self-interest decision-making and push for more rational and sane debating, with fewer sideline ranters. What you can ask for is egos, quite large in the political world, to be set aside more often for the good of the people, as it was intended. Ask for it now, locally, and let's see what we get this election season; that's your job. Think about it…
