Sports Of All Sorts

What an end we had to softball and baseball seasons in Hawaii! From the HPU national championship in softball to the thrilling rides provided by the UH baseball and softball teams, it was a wonderful time to be a small ball fan over the past month. And with the numerous titles Hawaii youth teams have won in years past, including world Little League titles in 2005 and 2008, it might be time to add softball and baseball to the sports that Hawaii competes well in, especially relative to our population base.

Hawaii has long been associated with excellence in volleyball, but now people take notice of Hawaii in a wide variety of sports on a number of levels- from youth up through makule league participation. Baseball, softball, soccer, and golf all have strong Hawaii performances, and there are an amazing number of NFL players from Hawaii, perhaps the most per capita of any state.

And for those who think that sports efforts are over-rated, that sports are only a physical exercise, a good argument could be made that the whole psychological profile of this state was lifted up over the past month as everyone watched and listened to our college kids shine under pressure-packed circumstances, time after time. What an exhilarating trip around the bases it was; so kudos to the players, coaches, and families at HPU and UH- you most definitely hit a home run (or two) for all of us. Think about it…
