Forlorn Furloughs

The onset of furlough days and cutbacks at the local level will undoubtedly have an impact in the months to come. One thing you might consider is planning ahead, and avoid doing business with city halls and government offices on Fridays.

Refuse centers, Honolulu Hale, satellite city halls, gyms, swimming pools, some city parks, licensing bureaus, etc., will be shut down two Fridays per month. So rather than ponder which Friday is which, get your business done, as you can, on the other days of the week. While furloughs are not an ideal solution, layoffs or deeper cutbacks are not pragmatic or viable options. Keep in mind that what's going on with forced savings by the government locally is no different than what's going on in just about every state and major metropolitan area around the country.

And while essential services will continue to operate in a "business as usual" mode, you can only imagine the angst and stress that some of these cutbacks and shutdowns will cause. Anxious consumers, overtaxed administrators and clerks, more paperwork in less hours, hot summer days- it just might require people to do some deep breathing exercises to handle the changes. Such is the reality- here and elsewhere- of a prolonged economic slump that continues to weave its way into our daily lives. Think about it…
