Pali Parking

The recent parking fee introduced at the Pali Lookout for the cars of non-residents has proven to be a great success thus far. Apparently, visitors from afar think it's reasonable to pay $3.00 to help with the security and upkeep of the area. The results from the first three-months of this venture have been more than triple what park officials expected. Either that means a lot more people are showing up and taking the chance on a bad hair day up there, or people are paying in higher percentages than was expected.

While we certainly can't nickel and dimes our all-important guests at every venue or historically significant site around the state, it is interesting to note that people apparently do appreciate that there is a price to pay for paradise and its upkeep, and sometimes that price can be quite fair and reasonable. Sure, some visitors won't pay up at the Pali, but since the initial numbers have been far larger than officials had originally predicted, hopefully the extra bucks will mean more repairs and improvements can take place at the site more quickly in order to make the windward vista experience an even better one.

While I am not naïve enough to think that 100% of the earnings at this site will be earmarked for the site, it would be great, in our efforts to avoid dipping into depleted state coffers, if some of the parking money actually does stay up at the Pali in the form of upgrading ramps, signage, and such, so that all of us who appreciate the view and the history up there- locals and out-of-state visitors alike- can reap great benefits from this program.  Think About it…
