Schooled Again

It can't continue. Really, it can't. We can't keep hearing the stories or seeing the results of virtually no improvement in our school systems as a whole. Testing scores once again validate the claim that something has got to be done. Would an appointed school board make the difference? Maybe, but it would also lead to a greater politicization of the system; witness how we can't even deal with a Supreme Court chief justice situation without allegations and innuendos.

Certainly the issue of students wanting to learn and seeing the value of education begins at home, and for that, parents need to be more accountable. School is not a baby-sitting service. But too many of our public and charter schools just aren't making enough inroads on a regular basis. Accountability is usually sloughed off on the system, the paperwork, the time constraints, the endless requirements of government bureaucracy in the No Child Left Behind debacle. Some of this is true, no doubt. But apparently humans are rarely, if ever, responsible for moving things in positive way.

There are many great teachers and administrators out there- no question about it. Do they have the tools, time, and freedom to help their students succeed? There are also some mediocre teachers and administrators out there- it happens in every line of work. Is there any sense that these people can be motivated or subsequently removed if they don't get it? Doubtful, right now... The system, set up by people for people, simply won't allow it. The kids lose, and then we all lose as a society- for this really is our future here. Think about it…
