WAC-ky World

As the defectors did what most defectors do last week- they looked out for their own self-interests, the Western Athletic conference took yet another shot. After losing Boise State to the Mountain West Conference a few months back, and then hearing that BYU might be willing to come back into the WAC in all sports except football, it seemed like the dust had settled. But this is the ever-changing world of college sports in this decade, where the almighty dollar rules and all else is left behind, including traditional rivalries and historic ties.

What's next for UH? Well, independence would be tough in every sport, including football. Do you really think that teams in top conferences will want to come out to play Hawaii in the middle of their conference seasons in October and November? Heck, we‘ve already seen some teams beg off early or late season games at Aloha Stadium- remember Notre Dame, Texas, and Michigan State? And does that mean Hawaii would have to play five or six road games in September and October?

The best option might be to take in schools that don't look all that sexy right now, but you never know. The WAC survived massive defections into the Mountain West Conference a while back. And Boise State was no big name when it came aboard in 2001, and the rest, as they say is history- including Boise State. And so it goes in the WAC-ky world of college sports nowadays; think about it…
