Ground Control To Major Tom

Is there other life in the universe? Well, we just got assumedly a little closer to the possibility of finding out, as the Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea has  found an earth-like planet, named Gliese 581g, about 20-light years from here. Now I know what you're thinking- let's go check it out. Well, if you got into a rocket and went there at 1/10th  the speed of light, or 68-million MPH, it would take you about 200-years to get to Gliese 581g.

Now I don't know about you, but that certainly tempers the thought of possibly finding our long lost outer space relatives. And what if the life forms we find out there are like our distant cousins or crazy uncles? Now we're gonna feel obligated to visit and call and listen to their stories, and… on second thought, maybe we should just let the universe be, and worry about our own issues right here on mother earth.

Gliese 581g apparently hovers between -24 degrees and +10 degrees on a consistent, daily basis; amazing how the intergalactic forecasters can get it right in outer space and yet we sometimes mis-call tomorrow's rain forecast right here in Kalihi. Anyway, kudos to the sharp-eyed astronomers who found this intriguing space body that might house water and therefore life forms. Maybe we can find a new college team to add to the WAC or a burgeoning tourist market up there to help our local economy. Think about it…
