To Holly Beck's mother roller-skating, cheerleading and dancing were approved sports. Surfing wasn't in the picture. But Beck saved her money and bought her own wetsuit and board as a sophomore in high school.
She went on to get a degree in psychology from the University of California, San Diego before turning to surfing full time. She landed the highest scoring wave at Trestles during the 2001 amateur championships before taking the California Governor's Cup and the national championship and is the number eight-ranked woman in surfing.
Aside from modeling, Beck was presented with the 2000 Teen Choice Award for Female Extreme Athlete. She is also President of International Women's Surfing, a newly-formed union.
