HONOLULU (KFVE) - In recent weeks, the guys have been traveling all over the place but this week they're going back to their roots, old school! Russ and Lyle visit Honolulu's favorite place for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert! They're at Liliha Bakery, this week's Cheap Eats!
Liliha Bakery opened its doors in 1960, fifty years ago! Not much has changed over the years, people line up for those sweet goodies and take a seat at the counter for those any time meals. Some great mainstays at Liliha Bakery include the teriyaki steak plate, dripping with sauce and the mahi mahi plate with a huge serving of fish. But the star of the show is the cocoa puff with its variety of flavors. Lyle gets a little possessive while holding a plate of those tasty morsels.
Visitors can sit at their service counter just like the old days and order up winners like the loco moco with two eggs on top or everybody's favorite, the hamburger steak, just like mom used to make!
This week on Cheap Eats, special guest Coach Dana Takahara-Dias from the Rainbow Wahine basketball team takes a minute to chat with Russ.
"Why do you like Liliha Bakery?" asks Russ.
"I gotta admit this is history for me, having been brought here by my parents as a young kid, now it's my turn to bring my children here. So it's kind of a family affair over the years," Dana replies.
Liliha Bakery is privileged to be open twenty-four hours every day except Monday. And when you come, you can order anything you want.
"Regardless if it's morning, noon or night, its pancakes and a chocolate shake," Dana says.
The guys reminisce their small kid days when they had just had one problem, sitting at the counter trying to figure out whether to have lunch or dessert first. Not surprisingly they decide on dessert first and dig into a couple of cocoa puffs. Which will you have first? Main meal or dessert? The choice is yours at Liliha Bakery, this week's Cheap Eats!
