A chance for Hawaii residents to win a million-dollars is underway. The Kalihi Education Coalition (KEC) is sponsoring the "Passion for Perfection 2003 Hawaii State Million Dollar 'Hole-in-One' Championship," Sat., Sept. 20, at the Hawaii Prince Golf Club.
People can qualify by doing one of the following: 1) anyone who hits a hole-in-one on a rated Hawaii course between July 25-31 automatically qualifies (no entry fee/donation required), 2) anyone who enters the contest with a $5/day entry donation and makes a hole-in-one on a rated Hawaii course in the month of August can qualify, or 3) if a person has made a hole-in-one on a rated Hawaii golf course in the past and can prove it, with a $100 donation, will qualify. Contestants must be at least 18 years of age, male or female, U.S. Citizen and current resident of the State of Hawaii.
"According to one local newspaper, between 200 to 250 holes-in-one are hit on Hawaii golf courses every year," said KEC President Roger Higa. "We estimate there are at least 12,000 golfers in the State of Hawaii that have made a hole-in-one sometime in their lifetime," Higa said.
Qualifying rounds will be held on Sat. Aug. 30 and Sat. Sept. 6 at the Hawaii Prince Golf Club in Ewa. The top ten contestants who come closest to the pin in the qualifying round will be chosen to compete in the finals. Every contestant will be insured for $1 million in the final round. Thus, "if every contestant makes a hole-in-one in the final round, $10 million will be paid out," said Higa. To obtain an application or for more information, log on to www.kechawaii.org or call the KEC hotline on Oahu at (808) 330-4693.
Proceeds will benefit students of the Kalihi-Palama public schools by way of KEC, a non-profit organization that was created by business people, educators and community leaders to support students in the Kalihi District. Members of the KEC have "passion and heart for education" and are excited to make a difference for Kalihi's youth.
