Whacky WAC Gets Whacked

The only constant in the world of college athletics these days is change. As the WAC announced that it would be adding two Texas schools and the University of Denver in the fall of 2012, one thing for sure was that nothing is firm and solid. Now UH is planning to move into the Mountain West Conference in football in 2012, and to the Big West in other sports, except men's volleyball, which will stay in the MPSF. Who knows what Utah State is thinking these days after turning down Mountain West overtures to remain loyal to the crumbling WAC a couple of months back. And will possibly BCS-bowl bound TCU bolt for the Big 12 or Big East at some point?

It's hard for athletic directors to be thinking long-term when the fluid nature of the college sports landscape twists and turns just about every six-months or so. The Pac-10 is becoming a Pac-12, the Big 12 is soon-to-be a Big 10; the real Big Ten will soon be a Big 12 with Nebraska joining the current 11 member Big Ten, and the Big East is looking to add multiple teams soon, even if they are not in the East.

For UH, the math was simple- find a way to get the best match for your programs, which was not so simple, of course. Aligning with the right teams in the right conferences has become a very tricky business in the 21st century, and rest assured, this is all about business. UH has apparently made its move for 2012 and beyond- great moves if it all plays out- but with dominoes still to fall and other variables in play, this college sports-drama has yet to reveal its final act. Think about it…
