HONOLULU (KFVE) - What's in a name when the food is so great? On this week's Cheap Eats, Russ and Lyle head to a place where the food goes far beyond what it's known for.
"Okay Lyle, you're pretty good with your Cheap Eats trivia. When you think Kua'aina, what do you think? Well, like most people I think burgers. But actually Kua'aina is a sandwich shop. And it's where we've come for today's cheap eats at Ward Center."
In fact, Kua'aina has ten different sandwiches made to order as well as those famous burgers that come in one third and half pound sizes. Plus, they make their shoestring french fries fresh every day. Some sandwiches of note are the pastrami and swiss on rye bread, the veggie sandwich with eggplant, red and green peppers plus grilled onion and the Kua'aina'mahi mahi ortega chili and jack cheese sandwich.
"Alright, it's lunchtime here at Kua'aina and we're with Chris. Chris, you're in here quite a bit," asks Lyle.
"Yeah, almost every day," replies Chris, one of the patrons at Kua'aina Sandwich.
"Sometimes I skip Saturday or Sunday!" he laughs.
There's a good reason Kua'aina Sandwich is known for their burgers. When you come you'd better come hungry. Their half pound burger with bacon and avocado is a winner and sandwich prices range from $6.60 to $8.40. A burger will cost you $7 to $8.40. Just keep it simple like Chris!
"Every time I go somewhere else I say, ‘Oh I could have had a Kua'aina!' "
Russ decides on the ahi salad, displaying all the colors of the rainbow with the orange carrot, the green avocados, purple onions, plus a big slab of ahi. Lyle goes with the pineapple burger with a couple of slices of grilled pineapple, cheese and some grilled onions. The guys share a side of the fresh made fries. You can find all this and more at Kua'aina Sandwich at Ward Center. This week's Cheap Eats.
