December Gifts

Around this time of year, when everyone talks of being jolly and hands out the goodies, you also see a lot of stress- increased traffic, family pressures, rushing around for gifts, pants not fitting like they used to. Avoiding drama is generally a good thing in one's life. It's great to have passion and be filled with life and have energy, but drama is a physically and mentally debilitating dilemma if it hovers around you for too long.

So before you head off into the holiday world of parties, holiday expectations, lack of sleep, and wrapping up of the gifts and the year, take some time to decompress now and plan things out. If you gotta be in Waianae or Hawaii Kai by 5pm, give yourself an extra 20-minutes to get there from downtown. If you're going to shop at ala Moana Center, don't bother looking for the closest parking space, accept the one further back in a calm manner and enjoy the exercise. If you want to scarf up that really good, but oh-so-fatty fried pork something with gravy on the party table, just accept that outside of blueberries, walnuts, and broccoli , just about everything else is gonna kill us anyway. I know, moderation is the key to life, but there's an asterisk by that line that also says "… except in December".

When you start to get flustered at the interminable line for gift wrapping, start humming Jethro Tull's "Thick As A Brick"; great tune, it's 44-minutes long, and if you hum it loud enough, some people in line will most surely move away from you. All kidding aside, we live in too nice a place to let the holiday spirit turn mean, so do a little planning to avoid becoming your own mini-soap opera this holiday season. Think about it…
