A Sporting Chance

Lots of great sports in various forms for local fans as the new year gets underway. Golf always takes the spotlight with events on neighbor islands and on Oahu at the Sony Open. The UH winter teams promise great hope, with men's basketball providing an exciting, never-quit brand of ball and a chance for a post-season berth if it can finish with a .500 record in conference play. Meanwhile, the wahine team has a couple of real stars on its roster, and has shown signs of being competitive throughout conference play. And local high school and Division II PacWest hoops here boast some great, competitive teams that should make for some exciting inter- and intra-island battle royales over the coming months.

Men's volleyball at UH has high hopes of surpassing last year's #4 national ranking with quality returnees and a few solid rookies, and the NFL's Pro Bowl is back on Oahu after a year in Florida, much to the players delight, no doubt.

And then there's the other side of the sports world- the BCS, which makes the No Clue At All (or NCAA) almost seem enlightened after it failed to act more diligently in dealing with some questionable player activities at a number of schools. Yes, the good old boys club keeps their perimeters guarded, rewards only their top tier bowl friends, and keeps the college football world from having what everyone else logically wants- a true national playoff system. Eight teams, use the existing big bowls as playoff sites for the quarter-finals; problem nearly solved. BCS- Brazen Closed System, and that's how they like it. Think about it…
