KAIMUKI (KFVE) -- In Japanese, "ichiban" means "number one." So if you put it in your restaurant name, it has to be good. This week's Cheap Eats heads to the top of the hill in Kaimuki to Sushi Ichiban.
"Actually, you have to spread it. You have to spread the rice out," said Chef Manny. "You actually hold it like this and push it back."
We're trying to craft a volcano roll. It's a California roll topped with scallops, salmon, hamachi and a little bit of heat. After a quick torching, it's topped off with a sweet Thai sauce, and it's ready to roll.
You can never go wrong with Sushi Iciban's lunch specials. For $8.95 you can get their nigiri sushi set, or their sashimi set. If you like your lunch cooked, how about their tempura set? It has shrimp and vegetable tempura also for just $8.95. Continuing on that $8.95 lunch special theme, Sushi Ichiban also has teriyaki chicken or mochiko chicken. If you rather have soup, there's the shoyu ramen for just $7.50.
In addition to their daily specials, Sushi Ichiban has a whole list of ramen. The restaurant is located just off the corner of 12th and Waialae in Kaimuki. They're open for lunch and dinner.
