Cut Rut

Now that we have gotten beyond the honeymoon phase of the political season, where everyone talks about making things right and making things better, the nitty gritty work is creating some angst and some rebuttal. Two facts about the impending cuts that will have to be made, no matter where they are made: #1- some people are going to be upset and claim the cuts aren't fair; #2- areas that previously seemed sacrosanct in the past will be shaken, not stirred.

Taxing retirement income? That could cause some people to leave the state, which will also be costly. Ending Medicare reimbursements and spending cuts to welfare? No question the details will determine just how deep and how drastic some of these cuts will be as they get approved and implemented. For years now we have heard the tale of woe as spending outgrew revenue locally, nationally, and worldwide. And now we are just beginning to see the painful reality of what happens when the normal cutbacks simply aren't enough.

Politicians usually spend a good deal of time trying to make friends, sometimes even at the price of making tough decisions- it's an annual move made to help ensure re-election, otherwise known as employment. But the cuts being proposed now on many levels are hitting some people hard, and friends will be hard to find for our elected officials as more cuts are announced; just one more unfortunate byproduct that this fiscal debacle has created here and elsewhere. Think about it…
