(Honolulu-AP) -- University of Hawaii starting quarterback Timmy Chang will sit out the Warriors' season opener. Associate athletic director Tom Sadler said that Chang violated an academic policy when he played in the inaugural Hawaii Bowl last Christmas Day.
Sadler says the NCAA has reinstated Chang on the condition that he sit out the August 30th game against Appalachian State at Aloha Stadium.
In March, the Western Athletic Conference publicly reprimanded UH and fined the school five-thousand dollars. The punishment was for failing to certify its players had completed the conference-required six credits during the fall term of 2002 prior to the bowl game.
Sadler says after grades were submitted December 28th, Chang was found ineligible to play and Hawaii officials immediately reported the infraction to the WAC office.
