On Board

The governor has announced his Board of Education selections, and now the real work begins. Pending Senate approval, this group with a wide background in various areas of business, education and philanthropy now has the unenviable task  of working together amongst themselves, with the legislature, and with the education hierarchy to try and figure out how best to run and manage our public education system.

Hopefully, this group will be good listeners and then really good reactors to try and move things along. More autonomy for districts; less micromanaging; more rewards for entrepreneurial thinking within the constraints of the system; more accountability and rewards for those excelling; more punitive measures for those unwilling to improve and respond to the needs of the kids? Easy questions to address on the surface, but tough to find answers when it comes to quantifying success and putting new measures into place in a system quite firmly entrenched. And there are those nasty national standards and stressful measures that come into play and into question every year as schools look to remain in line.

Finally, there is always the question of public school parental involvement- how much will the parents help out to ensure that their keiki are interested, involved, and aware of the value of education? How much time will parents invest in working with the schools and with their kids to provide them the best possible opportunities for success? With a new Board of Education soon to be in place, the real homework will begin for these nine civic-minded individuals as they look to put action into the often hollow words of education being vital to our future. Think about it…
