APEC Opportunities

There might never be a better time to show our other game face than this November when the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings take place here on Oahu. The “other” game face I am referring to is our business side. Everyone knows what a great place Hawai’i is to visit, and a lot of us know what an amazing place it is to live in.

But common perceptions about Hawaii from business types around the globe often exclude the fact that lots of business gets done in Hawaii and new business can get done in Hawaii. Years ago, before the first dot-com bubble burst, I remember then-Governor Cayetano talking about Hawaii being fertile ground for the next Silicon Valley, or at least a place for some companies trying to gain an edge in the competitive tech field. There was even talk back then of a Mayo Clinic branch coming to Hawaii, the ideal location for mingling Eastern and Western medicine; that never happened.

Tech businesses rely on software and hardware, and the lure of Hawaii might attract people to work for a company far away from the brutal, competitive area outside of San Francisco, but still just a click or Skype away. Unfortunately, that idea never took hold in a big way in the 1990s, but who knows- this opportunity might spawn some of the 15,000+ dignitaries who show up in November to see Hawaii as an ideal spot for their next business venture, or an offshoot of a successful business. APEC might just change some perspectives on what Hawaii really does have to offer for global business in the decades ahead. Think about it…
