This week's Cheap Eats is back in downtown Honolulu right across the street from Aloha Tower at a place that successfully blends the traditional with the new. The guys are at the Harbor Court, the atrium, at the Umami Cafe Japanese Coffee Bar."
This place has everything; bentos, sweet treats, and freshly rolled sushi are just some of their ono offerings all in a pleasant atmosphere. There are many great lunch items like the shrimp tempura and spicy ahi roll or one their ready-to-go bentos. Umami has a great bento assortment, ranging from chicken katsu, salmon and saba.
And if a bento is not what you're craving, check out some of their incredible sandwiches like the the turkey-cranberry or tuna with dill. If you're looking for something different, try one of their seafood sandwiches like the spicy ahi or lobster salad.
"We're down here at Umami café with Blaine,"says Russ. "Blaine why did you suggest this place for Cheap Eats?"
"Umami is a great place to come, they've got fantastic food at very reasonable prices," he replies, "they kind of respect the tradition of the Japanese bento."
Umami Cafe has everything you'd expect to find in a coffee house like coffee and pastries. But their lunch offering has a great variety as well. Russ has a shrimp tempura hand roll and a seafood bento the spicy ahi, the crab and lobster. Lyle has the Kamikaze bento with Kalbi, hot dog, chicken wings, and gyoza."
Whether you're craving a bento, a sandwich or dessert, Umami Cafe has got you covered, it's this week's Cheap Eats!
