Fishing Tails

In less than a month, the Waikiki Aquarium will debut its new exhibit, an amazing tank of life showcasing coral and fishes heretofore unseen by most humans. The exhibit will be a small attempt to re-create what goes on in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, a vast mass of tiny atolls and shoals about 1,000 northwest of here.

Very few people actually get to go to this protected area, as it's a harsh trip, with no access to emergency boats sometimes for a week or so at a time. The raw beauty of Papahanaumokuakea and its pristine conditions make it one of the last sites on this planet that lies relatively protected from humans and their intrusive ways. Bringing a piece of this wonder world to our shores is truly a gift.

This exhibit should be a great boost to the Aquarium, with unique masked angelfish, coral and a host of other tropical specimens that even the hardiest fish fan has probably never laid eyes on. And for those of us who thought maybe we'd seen it all when it comes to ocean fare, well, this is a nice opportunity to support one of our local museums and will also provide new educational opportunities for our keiki and our schools. New treasures to behold from our very own sacred World Heritage site… now that's a fishing tail worth recognizing. Think about it…
