Doctor's Orders

We have a lot of phenomenal health care professionals in Hawaii at all levels. Unfortunately, we don't have enough in many areas- one estimate I heard suggests we are 700 doctors short throughout these islands. Many docs find themselves in such demand that they simply cannot take on new patients. Recently, I got to experience the system first-hand. What I learned is that quality care from doctors, nurses, staff personnel, etc., is a blessing and that we have lots of great people here to care for you when the need is there.

Your part in staying healthy is to take care of yourself; that's a given. Take pre-emptive measures as you grow older even if those measures sometimes feel burdensome, invasive, and/or time-consuming. Make sure you get tested for age-appropriate concerns, whether it's a mammography, a colonoscopy, an eye test, dental care, or specific blood test markers. Do not rely solely on heredity, your luck so far, or the fact that you feel OK. If more people took simple steps to help doctors identify possible issues early on by doing their part in keeping up on annual exams, a lot of anxiety, problems, appointments, second opinions, extra tests, surgeries, and side effects could be avoided down the road.

Don't become a statistic because you didn't do your part to make sure that your engine is running smoothly; same goes for your parents, kids, and friends. Many people treat their cars better than they treat themselves via annual tune-ups. An ounce of prevention is worth piece of mind and far more than a pound of cure. Think about it…
