Hail, Hail Haleiwa!

There's talk about major renovations in Haleiwa town.  Landowner Kamehameha Schools is looking to upgrade, demolish, and/or refurbish the main block in historic Haleiwa, in order to make sure the buildings meet code. And yet, Kamehameha also wants to preserve, the local, rural nature that makes Haleiwa such a charming stop for so many people.

Whether it's the arts and crafts, the restaurants or the incredible shave ice, Haleiwa has a lot to offer for local and visitors alike. And since the landowner has come out publicly with its stated goal to enhance the country feel of the town, this can only be seen as good news, though some are approaching it with trepidation, something that happens quite often when change is in the air.

Finding homes for artists and others with reasonable space and rent might be a challenge, but adding sidewalks and park space and better buildings has to be viewed, in the big picture, as a real plus for the area. The good news is that Kamehameha Schools is listening, asking for comments, and saying all the right things as they make this move on the North Shore. Undoubtedly, not everyone will be pleased with decisions and moves, but here's hoping this plan ends up to look and feel as positive as it sounds right now. Think about it…
