Musical Chair(men)

Without much fanfare, the Honolulu City Council changed its chair person last week, as Nestor Garcia stepped down and Ernie Martin moved to the top rung of the Council.  There were rumors about a possible change at the top, but Garcia simply said "it's time". And maybe it is, for whatever reason. After all, this is not the first time that we've seen changes among the existing Council members. Come to think of it, committee changes, power purges, personality issues, it seems like an annual Council event.

Maybe that's why it didn't seem like that big a deal last week when the upcoming change was announced. The change still requires a Council vote in the next week or so. But you have to wonder about what this move might mean in the next year with committees and such- will we see more shuffling, some power plays as we head into an election year?

Who knows, but one refreshing sign of the council in the past six months has been the seeming compatibility with the Honolulu mayor. Local denizens are well aware of the years and years of in-fighting among the council and the battles with strong mayors in years past. So let's keep an eye on the Honolulu City Council over the next 15-months as we head into major decision time periods, including budget cuts, no doubt, and a 2012 political season where some will be getting set to seek higher office. Let the musical chairs begin. Think about it…
