Think About It: Food For Not

According to a recent study by the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Foundation, Hawaii ranks as the fifth lowest state when it come to adult obesity. That's the good news. The bad news, according to the study, is that the rate of obesity in adults in Hawaii is 23%. That's about a quarter of adults here. Back in 1995, Hawaii's obesity rate was just 11%, the best in the nation, so the heavy news is that our local rate of heaviness is now double what it was in the mid-1990s. 20 years ago, no states had obesity rates over 15%. Today, only one state has an obesity rate under 20%! Talk about bad growth.

Now I am not the best person to be lecturing about eating habits- I do have a propensity to overeat good tasting stuff that is not in my innards' best interests from time to time, but the simple numbers do tell a story and portend some not-so-good things for our state going forward- like heart problems, cancer, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, and agonizing joint-related problems like arthritis that are in part due to simply carrying too much weight.

Not indulging at all in your favorite fried or fatty foods might be asking too much too quickly, but being aware of what you eat and how often you scarf up the sumptuous foods with fats and calories galore might provide some relief. Carrots to snack on instead of chips, light beer instead of regular beer, fruit instead of Ho Hos for dessert- you know the story. Yes, going cold turkey would be very tough, but eating cold turkey (without mayo and with whole grain bread) may just save your life and/or reduce the medical bills in the years ahead. Think about it…
