Think About It: Video Proof

The Kauai Police Department just became the state's first law enforcement group to start posting surveillance videos of crimes on-line, in hopes that curious amateur detective on-lookers might help provide some tips or clues. After all, if people can waste their idle hours watching cats on keyboards or tapping their toes to some cloying song about "Friday", then surely the good people of the Garden Island can spend a few minutes seeing if they might be of some help to the local law enforcement bureau.

We have truly become a nation of voyeurs, but it is in our blood, literally. From the days of watching guilty men hang from a noose to the now convenient mobile video devices, we simply can't get enough of looking at stuff- like other people's misfortunes. But this website of videotaped crimes actually has a real value, in hopefully putting perpetrators behind bars and maybe, just maybe, in shaming some people into thinking twice before they commit a crime in the first place.

Well, I don't know about the "shame" part. After all, we are a nation where people go on national TV to tell  doctors du jour what you and I might think are their deepest, darkest secrets, in front of a closely knit gathering of a million or so of their ogling and ooh-ing friends at home, watching while noshing on pork rinds. But hey, a recent video posted on the Kauai police website led to a subsequent arrest in a theft case. Big brother really is watching on Kauai, and this time it might not be such a bad thing. Think about it…
