Think About It: See Water

For years and years, motorists and business owners have put up with incessant flooding in the Mapunapuna industrial area. Rains and high tides have been the culprit, and while work is finally being completed, we hope, this month to stem the rising tides, you have to wonder- what took so long? The solution being offered is to install a one-way "duckbill" valve that will pull water out of the area, but will not allow sea water back in from the storm drains. Unless this technology just became available, why wasn't this project realized five- or ten-years ago?

Of course, even the solution didn't happen at normal speed, as the original plans got set back due to some problems after work began back in April, 2010. Really? So here we are, 17-months and many floods later, and hopefully the area around Ahua, Awaawaloa, Mapunapuna, and Kilihau Streets will no longer be home to two-foot deep wading pools from time to time.

The problem became worse as time and erosion sunk the street level. But why it took 10-years or more for this project to be handled is a bit of a mystery. The price tag is under $1-million, so this probably was not yet one of those big budget tussles over the years, but why business tenants, pedestrians, and motorists had to wade through this mess for so long is strange, unfortunate, and just wrong. I guess this one just fell through the cracks, literally. Good news on the repair; bad news on the decade it took to get there. Think about it…
