Think About It: Job? Fair.

It seems odd that we take off on Labor Day, yet labor on most other days. Of course, it's odd that we park on the driveway, yet drive on the parkway. And how come we get on the plane, yet get into the car? Frankly, you can get on the plane, I'm going inside…

But back to the labor thing; Hawaii's unemployment rate was 6.4%, with Honolulu showing the lowest unemployment rate of any county, while Hawaii county had the highest number of unemployed at 9.5%. But what about those who used to have second jobs, those who do work, but have seen their hours cut back, and what about those who have simply dropped out of the hunt for the time being? When you add the impact of those factors in, plus the fact that wages have been frozen for many while the cost of living continues to inch up, and you can see what there is a creeping malaise locally and throughout the country as it appears things simply aren't going to follow the usual economic patterns we have all grown so used to over the past 30-years.

The good news about the never-ending quest to improve technology is that it often makes things better, or easier. The bad thing is that it can take the place of people's jobs in many sectors of our economy. Future generations of workers will have to find new industries to replace ones that simply won't exist or won't need the manpower demands of the 20th century. That's a broad view. But the day to day reality we live in right now is making it hard for far too many people in Hawaii to get by reasonably or live as they would like to, and that's a problem. Think about it…
